Types of antidepressants

Serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine are special chemicals in the human brain that also happen to be neurotransmitters, which are frequently linked to the occurrence of depression. The mechanism of action of most antidepressants is to affect the mentioned neurotransmitters and thus relieve the symptoms of depression. Each class of antidepressant medications does it in slightly different ways.

However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of USA, UK and Australia demands that all antidepressants are marked with the black box warnings. This kind of warning is considered to be one of the strictest warnings for prescription drugs. The reason for this is that in some cases children and young people up to 25 years old have a sudden upsurge of suicidal behavior and thoughts in the first couple of weeks after starting the antidepressant or after the adjustment of the dose.
