Weight-loss medications are prescription drugs usually used by adult people who are obese or overweight and suffer from serious health problems because of it.
It is important to understand that prescription weight-loss drugs cannot be used as a substitute for a diet and exercise, but as an addition to it.
Weight-loss pills are growing popularity in the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand.
You are a candidate for treatment with weight-loss drugs if:
- your BMI (body mass index) is more than 30
- your BMI is more than 27 and you suffer from a serious medical condition connected with obesity (for example, diabetes or high blood pressure)
Your doctor or nutritionist should scrutinize your medical history, evaluate the possible side effects of the drug and take into account the potential interactions with other medications that you currently take.
However, weight-loss drugs are not suitable for everyone. For instance, pregnant women (or women who are trying to get pregnant) and those who are now are breast-feeding are not recommended to take weight-loss drugs. Before you buy weight-loss pills online just check it’s mechanism of action.
The mechanism of action of most weight-loss drugs is that they reduce the appetite and hunger, or enhance the feeling of fullness. Some of them do both. A drug called orlistat is an exception, as it acts by influencing the fat absorption process.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved five medications that are suitable for long-term use. These medications include lorcaserin (Belviq), liraglutide (Saxenda), phentermine-topiramate (Qsymia), orlistat (Xenical), and bupropion-naltrexone (Contrave).
At first, lorcaserin was a matter of concern, because its mechanism of action is somewhat similar to fenfluramine. Fenfluramine is a drug that was removed from the market because it negatively affected the heart valves by seriously damaging them. However, lorcaserin was never proved to be causing a similar effect. This drug is usually well-tolerated. It can cause mild side effects like nausea, headache, or back pain.
Liraglutide is primarily used to treat diabetes, but people also take it as a weight-loss drug. Unlike other medications of this type, liraglutide has to be administered by injection. The common complaints include nausea and vomiting.
Orlistat should be taken during a low-fat diet because it can cause some troublesome gastrointestinal side effects like loose stools or flatulence. You can also buy orlistat without prescription in the form of low-strength pills called Alli. Although some serious cases of liver injury were rarely reported, no evidence of cause-and-effect relationship was found.
Unlike the previously mentioned drugs, bupropion-naltrexone is a combination medication. Naltrexone can be a part of alcohol and opioid dependence therapy. Bupropion is actually an antidepressant and stop-smoking aid. It means that just like all the other antidepressants, bupropion can increase the risks of suicidal behavior. In addition, bupropion-naltrexone sometimes can increase blood pressure, so it is necessary to monitor the patient at the beginning of treatment. Nausea, headache, and constipation are the most common side effects of taking this drug.
